Pattern Energy Group is one of North America's leading independent renewable energy and transmissions services companies that is committed to developing, constructing, owning and operating projects that are built for lasting success. We focus primarily on wind energy and transmission in the United States, Canada and parts of Latin America, and selectively participate in other clean energy projects that complement our overall business strategy.
We identify premium projects in both the wind energy and transmission sector and develop and execute a strategy to make those plans a reality. Pattern oversees and carries out every step of the process in the development of our projects, from site selection through commercial operation. We bring expertise and a rigorous analytical perspective to all aspects of our business. Every decision we make is grounded in the insights and discoveries of our scientists, engineers, financial experts, and construction and operations specialists. Our company culture fosters and encourages creativity, innovation, and critical thinking.
We believe that our success as a business depends on building strong relationships with our employees, landowners, communities, business partners, customers and investors. Our goal is to deliver exceptional results to our stakeholders, and working in partnership with them is an essential part of what we do.
We have a strategy in place to expand our operating assets by 300 to 400 MW of wind generation capacity each year and to build additional transmission projects. We selectively pursue premium projects, meaning locations with the right site conditions and access to attractive consumer and ancillary services markets.
We are constantly identifying potential new sites, thereby increasing our options and decreasing our risk. Our large pipeline of mature projects allows us to opportunistically choose the right project at the right time in order to maximize benefits for our company and our stakeholders.
Another important focus of our growth strategy involves transmission projects. Transmission is a key component of the electric industry's infrastructure, and the existing system requires significant new projects and investment to allow energy from generating resources to effectively reach the consumers who need it. We combine our development skills and market knowledge to seek out strategic opportunities for new investments in transmission infrastructure.
In some cases, the projects we pursue are designed to make the existing transmission system operate more cost effectively. We do this by installing new transmission capacity to relieve congestion in the existing system and by giving consumers access the lowest cost generating resources. Other times, we develop new transmission projects to provide areas with abundant resources for renewable energy generation access to the consumer markets.
