Mike Garland, Chief Executive Officer
Mike oversees all aspects of Pattern, paying particular attention to efficient operations, raising and structuring capital, project selection, strategic planning, and corporate performance and values. Before forming Pattern, Mike led Babcock & Brown's North American Infrastructure Group. At Babcock & Brown, he initiated and managed project finance activities, energy development and energy investment, which grew to over $12 billion of assets in less than five years under his leadership.
For more than 25 years, Mike has developed, constructed, managed and invested in complex infrastructure projects in the United States and around the globe. Since the closing of his first wind project financing (150 MW) in 1989, he has managed the successful development and investment of nearly 4,000 MW of wind projects worldwide, as well as many transmission, renewable and conventional fueled power projects.
Mike has been recognized for his many contributions to financial structuring, technology development, environmental protection and education. Serving as a Trustee of the UC Berkeley Foundation, he and his wife Virginia (Gigi) Coe are active supporters of the University of California at Berkeley's Physics Department and the University of Washington Medical School and have founded The Bay School of San Francisco. Mike has written several books and articles on energy and finance and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from the University of California at Berkeley. He and Gigi have a son and a daughter.
Hunter Armistead, Executive Director
Hunter manages Pattern's project origination, construction and project financing initiatives. With more than 14 years of energy experience, he excels at managing and navigating multiple projects through the complex process of development and financing. Before forming Pattern, Hunter managed the renewable energy activities of Babcock & Brown's North American Infrastructure Group. In this role, he oversaw the expansion of Babcock & Brown's wind business, which grew to over 600 MW per year under construction across the United States.
He has worked at Edison Mission Energy where he led financing for one of the largest structured acquisitions in the utility sector. He was also a senior power developer at Conoco and an industrial controls manager at Honeywell. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Rice University. He and his wife Kerry have three sons.
John Calaway, Director of Wind Development
John oversees the identification, origination and development of Pattern's wind energy projects. He has pioneered the use of 3D imaging for prospecting and the use of radar and other technologies for reducing the environmental impact of wind projects. Before forming Pattern, he was Chief Development Officer at Babcock & Brown's North American Infrastructure Group.
John has nine years of wind development experience and 32 years of energy prospect origination and development experience. He started his career by selling his first energy prospect at the age of 19. Since then, he has also founded, served as CEO, and successfully grown two energy development companies: Edge Petroleum, which was a NASDAQ-listed public company, and Superior Renewable Energy, which was acquired by Babcock & Brown. John is also an accomplished artist and musician. He and his wife Laura have four children.
David Parquet, Director of Development, Special Projects
David supervises the identification, origination and development of Pattern's solar, transmission, fossil and special energy projects. He is a leader in developing new methods of energy project contracting. Before participating in the formation of Pattern, he oversaw conventional power and transmission development for Babcock & Brown's North American Infrastructure Group. With over 20 years of infrastructure development experience, he has led a number of strategic energy and environmental business initiatives, including managing one of the most successful gas-fired power project development teams on the West Coast, which developed over 2,000 MW.
In addition, David oversaw the conceptualization, development and commencement of construction of one of the first independently developed and owned regulated transmission lines in the United States. He was also one of the founding members of the Board of Governors of the California Independent System Operator Company. David holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University and a Masters of Business Administration in Finance from the University of California at Berkeley. He and his wife Katie are avid photographers.
Daniel Elkort, Director of Legal Services
Daniel manages Pattern's legal department and co-manages the project finance team. Daniel oversees all aspects of Pattern's in-house legal team focusing on corporate legal compliance as well as transaction structuring and implementation, due diligence, document review, and liaison with outside counsel. In his role on the project finance team, Daniel manages debt sourcing, debt and equity legal and commercial transaction terms and transaction documentation. Before forming Pattern, he served as senior legal officer at Babcock & Brown's North American Infrastructure Group.
With over 20 years of industry experience, he has directed or supported the legal aspects and the financing of numerous renewable and conventional power projects as well as transportation equipment. He has successfully navigated the legal documentation of breakthrough debt and equity transactions in wind, solar and facility leasing. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of California at Berkeley and a Juris Doctor from Harvard University.
Eric Lillybeck, Director of Fiscal and Administrative Services
Eric supervises Pattern's accounting services, financial reporting, IT and facilities management. Before forming Pattern, he led accounting and financial reporting for Babcock & Brown's North American Infrastructure Group. He has over 25 years of experience in finance, business development, sales and marketing across the finance, infrastructure, airline, materials and chemical processing industries. Starting his finance career in investment banking with a focus on corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and capital market transactions, he has served as Chief Financial Officer of several start-up companies and, while at Northwestern Airlines, served on the board of three international joint ventures. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Business Administration in Finance from the University of California at Los Angeles.
